2018 Holiday Party
On December 2, 2018 the Triangle Chapter held our traditional Holiday party with lots of conversation, a sit down dinner and a gift exchange. There were fifty members attending the event held at the Raleigh Stag Chub with Bob Safrit hosting. Jean Soehnlein planned the event with catering by Pipers Tavern this year.
Members brought an unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots collection and and edible gift for the gift exchange.

To start the evening there were hors d'oeuvres,  soft drinks and much conversation as members caught up on family and car activities.  The buffet was prepared by Pipers Tavern and food choices choices were terrific.  Selections of apple pie, pecan pie or cheese cake gave everyone a favorite dessert.

The gift exchange by drawing names for selection from the gift table or stealing a previously opened gift was the evening entertainment. While the gifts were being selected auto related trivia questions were asked answered and debated. The wealth of automotive knowledge in the group proved useful. There were many fantastic edible gifts exchanged.  The Pink Elephant which has been with our club for many years was once again exchanged in a surprise hidden gift selected by Marilee Sanderson.

Everyone had a good time. Be sure to see the many pictures taken by Annie and Joel Goldman at:

Many thanks to Jean Soehnlein and her committee for making this event so successful.

2018 Triangle Chapter Chic-Fil-A Display November 10, 2018

It seems we annually celebrate the arrival of cold days of late fall by attending a car display.  Saturday November 10, 2018 was cold and windy at the Chick Fil-A car display.  Seven Triangle members came out with their vehicles to Chick Fil-A at Capital Crossing shopping center to enjoy a day of displaying their vehicles and car discussions.  Displaying vehicles were Jack Agayoff 1959 Ford Retractable, Bob and Bonda Fuhrman ’63 Mercury, Chet Butcher ’50 Ford, Tommy Fitzgerald ’72 Bronco, Dan Fuccella ’69 Buick, Roger Lopera ’50 Dodge, and Denny Oestreich ’57 Chevy.

             Tommy Fitzgerald's Bronco                                                            Roger Lopera's '50 Dodge

Four other car owners joined us for the display and we also recruited two new members.  Bob Lovelace brought his 64 GTO, Chip and Deb Robie displayed their 73 Corvette. Four NC State students arrived in their Red 1965 Mustang. They were all members of the NC State Marching Band who played at the Thursday night game.  They went to several venues looking for a cruise in and stopped to join you display for several hours. As in the past Chick Fil-A treated us to an enjoyable lunch. Thanks to Jack Agayoff for arranging this event.

Oak View Historic Park Heritage Day, Raleigh, NC, October 6, 2018

The Triangle Chapter participated in the Oak View Heritage day event. Five members displayed their cars and 10 members participated in a Take A-Par-T Demonstration.  The event was a fun day for young families and especially for kids. . They Oak View Park had many activities including animal displays with raptors, chickens, a lama, an alpaca, miniature donkeys, ponies and goats. There was also a real fish pond,  pony rides, and a horse drawn wagon ride. There were also many yard games for the kids to play. A band played for much of the day. The longest line was for the free pony rides.

Members displaying cars included Jim Gill, Marv Gage, Denny Oestreich, Ben Johnson, and John MacDonald. With only five Triangle Cars available, each car owner answered many more questions. Jim Gill’s 1925 Model T probably had more different passengers in the car than  it had for the previous 93 years of its history.  His grand daughters were in charge of managing the passengers and answering questions. The Chapter did one Take A-Par-T demonstration. With 10 Team members, some of whom were new and some who were a little forgetful, the assembly time was about 10 minutes. Let's see; does the splash pan go on top or under; which hole do the front fenders go in; does the turtle shell go on first or the rear fenders? The time was not a record, but good only our third time out this year and we all had fun. Thanks to Riley Riener and George Ashley for transporting the Take A-Par-T.   .

They had 79 vehicles entered in their show with AACA classes and open classes included. Triangle Members Attend AACA National Meet in Concord, NC

'No, Toto this is not Hershey in the fall, this is Charlotte in the spring. You can tell the difference because the show field is asphalt in the rain not grass in the rain. Four of the enthusiastic participants were from the Triangle Chapter.  I think their socks will be wet for days.'

The AACA Southeastern National Spring Meet was held at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, NC on April 7, 2018.  About 167 intrepid AACA members brought their vehicles out in the all day rain to be judged. 70 of these vehicles were from North Carolina.  Many (45) of the vehicles were on the judging field as fresh restorations seeking a First Junior award. It seemed strange to see the vehicles parked on the show field without their owners nearby. Most participants were either huddled in their vehicles or in the AACA tent socializing.

Henry Burgwyn and I did a one day turn around trip. Arriving at 9:30 am we found a prime parking place across the street from the AACA show. We held our umbrellas high and marched through the show field. I took a few pictures without owners. There were four entrants from the Triangle Chapter who all scored well, Jim Aldrich 1931 Chrysler(Repeat Preservation), Dan Fuccella 1950 Willys Overland Jeep (DPC), Bob Simpson 1973 Corvette (First Junior), and Glen Andrews 1938 Chevrolet Pickup (Senior).

Mike Petersen, Jim Aldrich and Dan Fuccella, Riley Reiner, Jack Agayoff, Dan Morton, Grady Conner, and Bob Safrit were Judges at the event. At the Judges Breakfast Mike Petersen was acknowledged with 300 judging credits and Jack Agayoff was recognized for 50 judging credits. Thank you for judging.

Then we walked through some of the other car Club displays under the grandstand where it was dry.  Eventually we ventured out to the flea market hunting elusive parts.  Over 50% of the vendors were already gone. Vendors had good days on Thursday and Friday, but left to avoid the heavy rains Saturday. There were many empty vendor spaces and puddles were many had left. I tried unsuccessfully the purchase a few things from one vendor in the Green Field who really did not want to get out his pickup truck to look for anything under his tarps. I came away with only one piece of wet aluminum trim for $20. The only other things we purchased were were an expensive $3 coffee and a $5 bottle of Sprite.

Triangle Members Attend AACA National Meet in Mobile, Al
Triangle Members who attended the AACA Winter meet in Mobile Alabama on March 23-24, 2018 included Mike Petersen, Annie and Joel Goldman, and Chad and Demi Goldman. The AACA Winter meet was been moved from Puerto Rico due to Mobile due to the 2017 Hurricane damage. The Deep South Region took over hosting duties and sponsored a successful meet. Mike Petersen and Annie Goldman joined Stan Fletcher, Chief Judge for the event, to help organize the Judging. Annie says, “The Saturday night banquet and awards presentation were held at the Convention Center. Salad, chicken or pork with veggies and pasta were our dinner options and they were good! Now, there are no better deserts than those on Long Island, but we had cheesecake for desert twice while on this vacation in Mobile, and both were de-li-cious!!!  If you've never been to a National Banquet and Awards Dinner, they recognize the Region(s) who hosted the event and award them with a recognition trophy, the President of the Host Chapter and the Chapter Chairperson will speak, the President of AACA National speaks, both 2017 and 2018 Presidents spoke. Board Members and Past Presidents are also recognized. Alabama Senator Bill Hightower was at the event and spoke on the love of cars and his beautiful state of Alabama. Chief Judge Stan Fletcher then announced the awards to all of the happy vehicle owners.
