Triangle Members Attend AACA National Meet in Concord, NC

'No, Toto this is not Hershey in the fall, this is Charlotte in the spring. You can tell the difference because the show field is asphalt in the rain not grass in the rain. Four of the enthusiastic participants were from the Triangle Chapter.  I think their socks will be wet for days.'

The AACA Southeastern National Spring Meet was held at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, NC on April 7, 2018.  About 167 intrepid AACA members brought their vehicles out in the all day rain to be judged. 70 of these vehicles were from North Carolina.  Many (45) of the vehicles were on the judging field as fresh restorations seeking a First Junior award. It seemed strange to see the vehicles parked on the show field without their owners nearby. Most participants were either huddled in their vehicles or in the AACA tent socializing.

Henry Burgwyn and I did a one day turn around trip. Arriving at 9:30 am we found a prime parking place across the street from the AACA show. We held our umbrellas high and marched through the show field. I took a few pictures without owners. There were four entrants from the Triangle Chapter who all scored well, Jim Aldrich 1931 Chrysler(Repeat Preservation), Dan Fuccella 1950 Willys Overland Jeep (DPC), Bob Simpson 1973 Corvette (First Junior), and Glen Andrews 1938 Chevrolet Pickup (Senior).

Mike Petersen, Jim Aldrich and Dan Fuccella, Riley Reiner, Jack Agayoff, Dan Morton, Grady Conner, and Bob Safrit were Judges at the event. At the Judges Breakfast Mike Petersen was acknowledged with 300 judging credits and Jack Agayoff was recognized for 50 judging credits. Thank you for judging.

Then we walked through some of the other car Club displays under the grandstand where it was dry.  Eventually we ventured out to the flea market hunting elusive parts.  Over 50% of the vendors were already gone. Vendors had good days on Thursday and Friday, but left to avoid the heavy rains Saturday. There were many empty vendor spaces and puddles were many had left. I tried unsuccessfully the purchase a few things from one vendor in the Green Field who really did not want to get out his pickup truck to look for anything under his tarps. I came away with only one piece of wet aluminum trim for $20. The only other things we purchased were were an expensive $3 coffee and a $5 bottle of Sprite.

Triangle Members Attend AACA National Meet in Mobile, Al

Triangle Members who attended the AACA Winter meet in Mobile Alabama on March 23-24, 2018 included Mike Petersen, Annie and Joel Goldman, and Chad and Demi Goldman. The AACA Winter meet was been moved from Puerto Rico due to Mobile due to the 2017 Hurricane damage. The Deep South Region took over hosting duties and sponsored a successful meet. Mike Petersen and Annie Goldman joined Stan Fletcher, Chief Judge for the event, to help organize the Judging. Annie says, “The Saturday night banquet and awards presentation were held at the Convention Center. Salad, chicken or pork with veggies and pasta were our dinner options and they were good! Now, there are no better deserts than those on Long Island, but we had cheesecake for desert twice while on this vacation in Mobile, and both were de-li-cious!!!  If you've never been to a National Banquet and Awards Dinner, they recognize the Region(s) who hosted the event and award them with a recognition trophy, the President of the Host Chapter and the Chapter Chairperson will speak, the President of AACA National speaks, both 2017 and 2018 Presidents spoke. Board Members and Past Presidents are also recognized. Alabama Senator Bill Hightower was at the event and spoke on the love of cars and his beautiful state of Alabama. Chief Judge Stan Fletcher then announced the awards to all of the happy vehicle owners.
