2019 Triangle Chapter Past Events

2019 Holiday Party December 1, 2019

By Jean Soehnlein
We had 35 members attending our annual Christmas Party at the Stag Club in Raleigh.  Dinner was catered by Piper’s Tavern:  Chicken Cordon Bleu, Stuffed Flounder (stuffed w/blue claw crab meat), plus a gluten-free chicken entrée.

Every year we participate in a game called “Dirty Santa”.  Each couple brings a wrapped gift that has a value of at least $10 and must be edible!  Denny creates a great trivia game – automobile related.  Each member is called upon to answer the question and then go to the gift table to pick one of the wrapped gifts and unwrap it at their table for all to see.  The next member can then either steal a gift or go to the table.  For more years than anyone can count, we have had a “Pink Elephant” disguised as a gift.  The member who discovers they are the recipient of it has the duty to return it next year wrapped in a mysterious way again.  In addition, those attending bring an unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots!  They will be taken to the Marines in Wake Forest.

2019 Fall Tour September 28, 2019

Our Fall Tour was planned and led by Marv Gage and George Ashley. The Tour route traveled on 26 miles of back roads from Wake Forest to the Cedar Creek Gallery where we spent some time shopping and looking watching the glass blowing. There are 26 Triangle members on the tour with 13 vehicles.

Triangle Chapter Car Show Report May 4, 2019

By Riley Reiner
Our 58th show is in the books.  Everyone worked hard to make it enjoyable for those attending. I was not aware until after the show that there were nine other shows within driving range.  I knew of the annual Horseless Carriage Tour which falls on the same weekend.  I want to give big thanks to ALL who volunteered for set-up, day of show, and break-down.  Special thanks to Denny for saving the plaque order and purchasing the door prizes; Jim for the outstanding awards; Let us not forget Jean Soehnlein and her organization of the hospitality tent and food brought to the meet; and George for being my assistant in all things including hauling supplies from and to the storage container.

2019 Chili Cookoff

Our Annual Chili Cook Off was held at Joel and Nancy Hoffman’s home on March 23, 2019.  Twenty five members attended. The weather was nice, but cool outside, so eating inside was very comfortable.  Many members drove their antique vehicles. Members brought eight chilies, two corn breads, and five desserts. A long table was set up inside their home. Joel and Nancy have added a major garage addition to make room for their car collection and a service area.  Joel has many projects underway that we were able to see and discuss. His current project is rehabilitating a racing Lotus. The car has been configured as a race car, but needs engine work. The Chili lunch was served buffet style with everyone tasting more than one chili. The names of some of chilies reflected some of the hotter offerings. The corn breads and side salad made a great lunch.  After eating, everyone  voted on the awards for best chili, hottest chili, best cornbread, and best dessert. Awards went to Best Chili -  Bloody Mary, John Gerken, Hottest Chili -  Carolina Reaper, Carl Worrell, Best Cornbread -  Peggy Barnes, and Best Dessert -  Sandra Reiner. Prizes were presented in decorated bags painted by Jean Soehnlein.

Many thanks to Jean Soehnlein for organizing the event and preparing the awards. Thanks also to Joel and Nancy Hoffman for hosting us in their home.

2019 Chic-fil-A Daddy Daughter Date Night

Two Chick-fil-A restaurants in North Raleigh sponsored a popular Daddy Daughter Date night at their locations, Capital Crossings and Falls Village. They decorate their restaurants with a 50s theme and invited their customers to make a reservation for dinner.  They invited the Triangle Chapter to bring their 50s cars to the restaurant for add to the 50s theme.  Since they host our Fall Car Display we were able to return a favor and help them. Julie Owen and Melanie Sumrall organized these events and even reserved spaces for our cars.

The dads and daughters booked tables in the restaurant for one of three reservation times, 5, 6 or 7 pm. They were then served chicken dinners, and given prizes, 50s eyeglasses, malts and other 50s mementoes.  The daughters were between four and twelve and dressed to go out with daddy.  Some of the girls even dressed in 50s costumes. The dads were between 30 and 40. The 1950s were years before either the daughters or dads were born, but not before us. One of the mementoes given out was a 45 RPM record which one little girl described as a CD with a hole in it.

On Wednesday January 30 there were four Triangle cars in attendance: Bill Werner, Chet and Mary Butcher, Bill Johnson, and Denny Oestreich.  It was too cold and windy for a car display.  We sat inside and talked and posed for pictures with the cows.

On Thursday, February 7, a much warmer night, Bill Johnson and Denny were back again at the Falls Village location.  They were fully booked for the evening and had a great crowd plus their regular customers. At one point the cows were escorted outside near the cars when one little girl became frightened by the cows and had a meltdown.  The Chick-fil-A staff also dressed in 50s costumes.  They treated us to chicken dinners.

We had a good time talking, eating and watching the fun.  If we are invited back again, and you are not afraid of cows, be sure to go. I guess the 50s are not over.
